What is so tricky about spelling?

25 January 2022 (by Rachel Bradley McKay (Head))

Well, it depends on the word, and on the person! We all find different aspects of spelling difficult. The great thing about our new spelling system is that it is individual. In a Go Graphemes Grafters session, children will look carefully at a word to find out which bit is the tricky part. We then think of a strategy - perhaps a rhyme, an image or an mnemonic - to help us remember how to spell that part.

We are also deepening our understanding by finding other words with similar sound patterns. This is a great way to build on the phonics skills which we all start learning in Reception.

Thank you to the parents who have joined us for the open spelling sessions so far this week. We hope you have found it useful.
